Hogg triple topples Romania

Back to Results

September 18th, 2007

Flanker Allister Hogg kept Scotland in the hunt for a quarter-final berth with a hattrick in his side’s 42-0 whitewash.

Scotland were never under pressure against a Romania side lacking the firepower in the backline to trouble them.

Romania failed to summon the spirit that saw them perform well against Italy in their opening pool game, while Scotland built on the solid performance they produced against Portugal.

Scotland, however, will not be pleased with the manner in which they regressed after a very promising opening quarter.

In the first 20 minutes there were no elaborate backline moves, just good percentage play. They kicked for territory and backed a very efficient lineout to secure or contest the ball. Their attacking play revolved around sucking the Romanians into rucks, and in so doing creating a numbers advantage they looked to exploit after fourth or fifth phase.

Scotland’s opening try was scrappy though. They collected a knock on before flyhalf Dan Parks nudged a little kick over the defensive line that the cover defence should have dealt with. Instead, it was Scotland wing Chris Paterson who scrambled to apply the downward pressure.

They doubled their lead through Hogg in the 16th minute after a powerful driving maul, but then descended into a woeful period characterised by basic handling errors and poor ball protection at the breakdown.

They remedied those flaws, and three tries either side of half-time seal the win. Centre Rob Dewey’s linebreak created the first for Rory Lamont, before Hogg struck twice, on both occasions finding himself in unfamiliar territory on the wing.

That knocked the fight out of Romania whose defensive structure fell to pieces allowing Lamont to finish a long-range counterattack.

The win takes Scotland to second in their pool and means they’re still on track to meet Italy in the decider in a fortnight. But while the scoreline looks emphatic, they will know they have to make significant improvements if they hope to make that clash with the Azzuri a successful one.

Scotland - Tries: Chris Paterson, Allister Hogg (3), Rory Lamont (2). Conversions: Paterson (6)
