Howlett hammers Italy

Back to Results

September 8th, 2007

Doug Howlett scored a hat-trick as the All Blacks clouted Italy 76-14 in Marseille.

The men in black began in ominous fashion with the first 20 minutes seeing six New Zealand tries and 38 unanswered points. Richie McCaw and Sitiveni Sivivatu picked up two apiece, rounding off instances of fantastic continuity and skill in the offload.

The New Zealanders crossed the whitewash all too easily. Italy appeared to lack the stomach for the fight at the breakdown and in the tackle. Their defence was also exposed early on, the line pressing and leaving the area behind unguarded. Dan Carter showed great vision in exploiting this space chipping twice to unleash a chasing player for a well finished try.

Carter and Luke McAlister excelled with the boot, and the inside centre’s clever grubber allowed Howett his third before the hour mark. Even Jerry Collins had a say in this department, nudging one ahead to pick up his second try in the 70th minute.

It was the magnificent support in broken play that allowed the All Blacks to score 11 tries, as the set pieces were well contested by the Italians. They lost one line-out and managed to pinch five on the All Blacks’ throw, while their solid scrumming surprised the much vaunted Kiwis pack in the first half.

The Azzuri picked up a late first half try when Marko Stanojevic intercepted a pass and ran 50m to score. A second bit of luck allowed Mirco Bergamasco to dot down late in the game, and Italy could have had a third when replacement Ezio Galon dived on a loose ball in the New Zealand in-goal area. However, TMO Craig Joubert ruled the All Black defence had been impeded and the try was disallowed.

New Zealand - Tries: Richie McCaw (2), Doug Howlett (3), Mils Muliaina, Sitiveni Sivivatu (2), Chris Jack, Jerry Collins (2). Conversions: Dan Carter (7), Luke McAlister (2). Penalty: Carter.
Italy - Tries: Marko Stanojevic, Mirco Bergamasco. Conversions: David Bortolussi, Roland de Marigny.
