Georgia beat Namibia 30-0 in what will almost certainly go down as the worst game of this World Cup.

Wet conditions meant this was never going to be a classic but the Georgians won’t care. They sensibly kept the ball amongst their forwards to claim a first-ever World Cup win in their second tournament. The margin would have been even greater had flyhalf Merab Kvirikashvili not missed three penalty attempts at goal.

Namibia coach Hakkies Husselman said before the game that he thought his side could win, but they offered little on attack and spent the majority of the match on defence.

The first half was dismal from a spectator point of view, with two penalties from Kvirikashvili giving Georgia a 6-0 lead. That became 13 when hooker Akvsenti Giorgadze was driven over just before the break.

The second half was not much better. Kvirikashvili botched two penalties before finally making it 16-0 with 12 minutes to go.

Right wing Irakli Machkhaneli grabbed Georgia’s second try when he tackled the ball out of Namibian hands and raced in under the posts. And an interception try from outside centre Davit Kacharava in the last move of the game rounded off a convincing win.

Georgia – Tries: Akvsenti Giorgadze, Irakli Machkhaneli, Davit Kacharava. Conversions: Merab Kvirikashvili (3). Penalties: Kvirikashvili (3)
