Pathetic Poms see stars (and stripes)

Back to Results

September 8th, 2007

England made a shocking start to the defence of their World Cup title when they beat the USA 28-10.

Based on this abject performance, the Boks should pummel the Poms next weekend and set up a quarter-final meeting with Wales.

That England could only score three tries against a Tier 3 nation (and fail to claim a bonus point) is a disgrace. The score was just 3-3 after 20 minutes before two Olly Barkley penalties edged the world chumps 9-3 clear.

Jason Robinson finally scored the first try just before half-time when he chased down a kick by Barkley. The flyhalf then went over himself to give England a 21-3 lead.

Tom Rees added England’s third in the 50 minute when he took a tap near the Americans’ tryline and barged his way through four defenders. But substitute prop Matekitonga Moeakiola scored the Eagles’ only try just before full-time to give the scoreline serious respectability.

England ended the match with only 14 men after No 8 Lawrence Dallaglio was sent to the sin bin after infringing during the build-up to the try.

England – Tries: Jason Robinson, Olly Barkley, Tom Rees. Conversions: Barkley (2). Penalties: Barkley (3).
USA – Tries: Matekitonga Moeakiola. Conversions: Mike Hercus. Penalties: Hercus.
