Wallabies waltz past Fiji

Back to Results

September 23rd, 2007

Matt Giteau bagged 27 points in Australia’s comprehensive 55-12 win over Fiji in Montpellier.

Fiji opted to save many of their stars for the upcoming game against Wales, while Australia were also without the likes of Stirling Mortlock and Stephen Larkham. Both teams failed to impress in the first 15 minutes, with sloppy handling inhibiting expansive intentions.

The Wallabies constructed a number of promising attacks, but a combination of poor execution and solid Fijian defending kept them in check early on. This was, however, the Fijians most impressive facet of play, as they coughed up possession in both the scrums and line-outs. They managed a few steals at the breakdown but were just as poor in securing possession whenever they launched an attack.

The Aussies varied their play well and although they spurned several opportunities they also finished a couple of beauties. Giteau rounded off two enterprising moves while Chris Latham orchestrated Drew Mitchell’s first try with a perfectly placed grubber behind the defence.

Fiji struck on the stroke of half-time, but unfortunately for them the second period proved far tighter than the first. The Wallabies switched to a safer game plan with Giteau kicking two more penalties and Berrick Barnes nailing a drop instead of shifting it wide.

Fiji exposed a rare lapse in the Aussie defence when Mosese Rauluni capitalised off a line-out to set up Aca Ratuva for great run-in. But Australia’s superiority in the forwards proved to much for the second-string Fijians, with Adam Ashley-Cooper securing the bonus-point try in the 56th minute. The Islanders remained competitive, but the Aussies finished with a flourish thanks to another two easy scores by Mitchell and a strong surge by replacement Stephen Hoiles.

Australia - Tries: Matt Giteau (2), Drew Mitchell (3), Adam Ashley-Cooper, Stephen Hoiles. Conversions: Giteau (4). Penalties: Giteau (3). Drop goal: Berrick Barnes.
Fiji - Tries: Isoa Neivua, Aca Ratuva. Conversion: Seremaia Bai.
