Average Aussies cruise past Canucks

Back to Results

September 29th, 2007

Australia secured the bonus point but failed to impress in their 37-6 win over Canada.

John Connolly’s second stringers gave a lukewarm showing at the rain-drenched Chaban Delmas Stadium, and initially it was the Canadians who were the hungrier of the two teams. The weather did inhibit the expansive inclinations of the Wallabies, but their set-piece-play is still far from clinical.

When they did manage to find some structure, the tough Canadian defence was stretched. Al Baxter got over in the corner after a repeated battering softened up the Canucks. Adam Freier was on the scoresheet later on when the forwards mauled from the line-out. Overall, the wet ball played its part, but the Aussies never looked convincing when employing the tight game.

They lifted their intensity in the second period, but so did the Canadian defence. Morgan Williams and his men repelled the relentless Aussie attack until the 50th minute when George Smith scored a soft try due to a line-out mix up. James Pritchard kept the minnows in the game with two penalties, but their inability to score tries meant they could only limit the damage.

The Wallabies turned it on in the final quarter, with Drew Mitchell finishing strongly with two tries. There were a few good interchanges between the Aussie backs, but Connolly will be expecting more when they play England next week.

Australia - Tries: Al Baxter, Adam Freier, George Smith, Drew Mitchell (2), Chris Latham. Conversions: Cameron Shepherd (2). Penalty: Julian Huxley.
Canada - Penalties: James Pritchard (2).
