1999 WORLD CUP
Australia

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

The 1999 Rugby World Cup was hosted by Wales with some matches in England, France, Scotland and Ireland. Only four teams qualified automatically - South Africa (1995 champions), New Zealand (1995 runners-up), France (1995 third place) and Wales (1999 Host).

It was decided to expand the tournament to 20 teams, divided into 5 groups. It also saw the introduction of a repechage, effectively a second chance for teams that had finished runners-up in each qualifying zone. Uruguay and Tonga were the first nations to benefit from this. The other qualifiers were Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Argentina, Fiji, Romania, Canada, Namibia, Japan, Spain and the United States. A quarter-final play-off round involving the five runners-up in the groups and the best 3rd placed team was necessary to decide who would join the pool winners in the last eight.

The final was contested by Australia and France, but the great win by France in the semi-final over New Zealand left them with nothing to offer in the final. Australia triumphed 35 - 12.
