1991 WORLD CUP
Australia

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

The 1991 Rugby World Cup was hosted by England with some games also held in other nations in Europe. The other nations included Ireland, Scotland, Wales and France.

The IRB decided that the 8 nations that made the quarter finals of the previous World Cup did not have to play qualification matches, instead they were automatic qualifiers. The 8 automatic qualifiers included Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, England, France, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Out of the thirty-three nations participating in the qualifiers the 8 remaining places was filled by Zimbabwe, Western Samoa, Argentina, Canada, United States, Japan, Italy and Romania.

The tournament would herald the emergence of the smaller nations onto the world stage. A capacity crowd at Twickenham saw an England side that had suddenly abandoned their feared forward approach to play a running game, which lead to their demise. Australia became the second World Cup Champions by beating England 12 - 6.
